Dr. Surinder Kumar
Dr. Surinder Kumar founded Vecima Networks Inc. in 1988. Dr. Kumar was a professor and holder of the Natural Science and Engineering Research Council’s Industrial Chair in Telecommunications at the University of Saskatchewan from 1987 to 1997. From 1982 to 1987, he was Vice President of Research for SED Systems where he was involved in the design of a variety of satellite earth stations. Prior to 1982, he worked with a government research laboratory in India. Dr. Kumar received his Bachelor of Engineering degree in electrical communication engineering in 1967 from the India Institute of Science, Bangalore, India and his Masters of Technology degree from the Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur, India in 1971. He received his Ph.D. in Electronics Engineering from Carleton University, Ottawa, Canada where he was a Commonwealth Scholar. Dr. Kumar was named 1998 Entrepreneur of the Year for Western Canada and 2005 Entrepreneur of the Year for the Pacific Region in Information Technology.
Dr. Kumar is a well-recognized expert in microwave engineering and has a number of patents and papers in this area. He has supervised a number of M.Sc. and Ph.D. students and has extensive industrial experience. Dr. Kumar has been a consultant to a number of industries and is listed in Who’s Who in America (Marquis), Who’s Who in Canada, Who’s Who Amongst Business Executives, and many similar publications. He is dedicated to conducting market and technical research in the microwave communications area and is heading the Vecima Networks Microwave Research Laboratory in Victoria, British Columbia.
Dr. Hugh Wood
Dr. Wood is a graduate of the University of Saskatchewan with degrees in Engineering and in Applied Physics. He is a registered Professional Engineer in the Province of Saskatchewan. After post-doctoral studies in Stockholm, Sweden, Dr. Wood joined SED Systems in Saskatoon as an R&D engineer. He became manager of R&D for the company, directing the development of a full line of industrial monitors and controllers. After a change of priorities at SED, Dr. Wood became a faculty member of the Department of Electrical Engineering at the University of Saskatchewan in 1980 and was the Department Head from 1993 until 2000.
Dr. Wood serves as a member of the Saskatchewan ICT Council and the Enterprise Saskatchewan Sector Team on Manufacturing where he advises the Provincial Government on policy issues surrounding the growth and expansion of the IT industry in Saskatchewan. He is also a volunteer Director and President of the Saskatchewan Orchestral Association.
Mr. T. Kent Elliott
Mr. Elliott is a 35 year veteran within the Internet security and telecommunication industries.
He has held a wide range of international executive positions including: CEO and Executive Vice-Chairman at ForeScout Technologies, Senior VP and Internet Communications at Nokia, President and CEO at Vienna Systems (acquired by Nokia December 1998), VP Sales and Marketing at TMI Communications, and Senior VP Product Management, GM of APAC and AVP of Business Development at Mitel Corporation.
Mr. Elliott has raised funds, sold and acquired companies and is a private start-up investor. He holds two degrees from Queen’s University, Canada: a B.Comm honours degree majoring in accounting and finance, and an MBA with a primary focus on marketing and strategic planning.
Mr. Vincent Gallant
Mr. Gallant is President of Blackline Financial Inc., a business valuation firm in Edmonton, Alberta. Vince received a BA (Economics) from the University of Alberta and articled to become a Chartered Accountant (CA) with KPMG. Most of his career has been spent working for medium and large public companies in senior finance roles. Vince was Controller for Alberta Energy Company Ltd. (AEC and now part of EnCana), Controller for Edmonton Telephones (ED TEL and now part of TELUS) and Vice President Finance for North American Energy Partners Inc. (NAEP). Mr. Gallant was also corporate secretary to the board of directors for NAEP and was CFO for Titanium Corporation Inc.
Career highlights include obtaining the advance tax ruling required in preparation of the preliminary prospectus for ED TEL and leading the IPO for North American Energy Partners when the company was dual-listed on NYSE and TSX. Mr. Gallant has worked in business valuation for the past six years and became a Chartered Business Valuator (CBV) in 2012.
Mr. Scott Edmonds
Mr. Edmonds’ 30 year career has been a unique blend of operational, strategic and financial leadership roles in both large and small companies in Canada, Europe and Asia. Most recently Mr. Edmonds led the turnaround of Webtech Wireless into a supplier of software as a service solution to fleet managers across North America. For his efforts, in 2014 he was recognized as a finalist for the EY Entrepreneur of the Year award (Pacific Region) in the B2B (business-to-business) category.
Prior to Webtech Wireless, Mr. Edmonds held CFO roles in two other Vancouver area software companies as well as 10 years with The Walt Disney Company in France, Indonesia and Singapore. Mr. Edmonds has also served on a variety of public and private company boards of directors over the past ten years. As a board member, Mr. Edmonds has acted as audit committee chair as well as governance and compensation committee chair. Mr. Edmonds holds a degree in finance and is a Chartered Accountant. Mr. Edmonds has also completed the Executive Development Program at The Kellogg School and was recently awarded the ICD.D designation.
